As the miles built up on our van we came to the point where a transmission fluid change was in order. Unfortunately when I cracked open the manual for our Ford Torqshift transmission, it became apparent that the owner-maintenance was excluded in the design considerations. It has no drain for the torque-converter chamber over half the fluidrequiring the fluid be expelled by the cooling lines, which are blocked by an internal thermostat.
2003-2007 6.0L Fluid Capacities
This means the transmission and new fluid must both be hot during the change in order to flush all of the old fluid out without closing the thermostat during the process. For an official fluid change the truck transmission is to be hooked up to a shop's fluid changing machine which pre-heats the incoming fluid and meters the fluid going in precisely with the fluid exiting. Essentially a sealed container with a diaphragm between two chambers, one of which takes in the old fluid, and displaces the new heated fluid forcing it into the transmission.
A search online led to a number of fragments of instructions on how to accomplish the change without the specialized equipment, but no complete sets of directions, so I pieced it together and decided to post up here with the scheme I used. A large part of doing the transmission flush is to keep track the amount of fluid drained and the amount sent in. You cannot get too far ahead qts at the mostnor too far behind don't want to run the pump dry on the amount of fluid in the transmission at any given time.
To help do this a graduated container to store the waste fluid is needed. Since the van sits so high I chose a 5 gallon Home-Depot bucket and marked each quart inside with a marker using a 1qt water measure to get the calibration in place.
The total fluid flushed out is a touch under 20qts or 5 gallons so I don't need to swap containers as I go. First I needed a method to heat up the transmission before the change. I was doing the change in the middle of winter, and found that after heating up the transmission by driving around on a highway, it would cool too far while I navigated the slow urban roads back home. To keep the heat in I tucked a garbage bag over the grill in front of the transmission cooler, which worked wonderfully.
Second I needed a way to heat the new transmission fluid to near f. To do this I thought of obtaining one of those nifty new turkey deep-fryers, but ended up opting for the more economical if potentially dangerous method of throwing the transmission fluid jugs into the oven on insulated cookie-pans to keep the radiant heat from the element off the jugs at the lowest possible setting f for a few hours, periodically checking the temperature with a non-contact thermometer.
To get the new fluid into the transmission it needs to go down the rather small transmission dipstick tube. To accomplish this with a minimum of danger of burning myself with hot oil I got a super siphon ready. The hose of the siphon jammed perfectly into the dipstick tube, and the jiggle-valve on the other end would quickly start the fluid flowing when needed, no pouring needed.
To drain the outgoing fluid I installed a valve on the fluid return line when I put in a transmission filter. Without this valve you can accomplish the same result by loosening the rear most fluid line from the transmission passenger side, near the transmission support cross-member and putting a hose over the line leading into the drain bucket.
Or, if accessible, pull the line off of the radiator from the transmission. I chose to use 2. Changing Torqshift 5R Transmission Fluid As the miles built up on our van we came to the point where a transmission fluid change was in order.Usp 42 online
Drain from main transmission pan drain if you have one about 7qts Remove transmission fluid filter housing, pull out old filter, pour out fluid, and put in new filter and screw it back in place. Place plywood platform on engine to set new fluid containers on. Thread outlet of siphon tube into dip-stick tube. Siphon 10 qts of fluid into the transmission dip-stick tube this overfills the pan by a little bit 3qts for the moment for the next few steps, but any more and there may be problems Start engine, fluid will immediately begin pumping out of the disconnected line into your graduated bucket.
Quickly start siphoning the next 10 quarts of fluid into the dipstick tube. Run the transmission through all gears, stopping for a few seconds on each so the valves can drain.Email: yourcovers pmli. PML Deep Transmission Pan For Ford 5R110 TorqShift with External Filter (2003 to 2008)
The exhaust is routed too close to the transmission pan to allow for the larger PML pan. Drilling and tapping for use with aftermarket sensors and gages is an option.
This pan has two locations that can be machined, one on the driver's side and one on the passenger's side. There are many different procedures for servicing an automatic transmission, including the popular and sometimes controversial power flush method.
The method described herein is favorable for the DIYer and requires no special equipment. For all intents and purposes, these service procedures are sufficient in maximizing the performance and longevity of the 5RW TorqShift transmission. Ford specifies that the transmission be serviced every 30, miles regardless of the type of driving. Failure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations may decrease transmission life significantly.
The bolts are all identical and require a 10mm socket. You'll need various extensions and a swivel joint attachment in order to access the rear pan bolts. The pan will retain a small amount of ATF, which should be emptied into catch container. If it is stuck in the orifice, carefully remove it with a small pick or screwdriver.
Lightly coat the gasket with fresh ATF to ensure a smooth installation and proper seal. Large metal filings or chunks of metal debris is indicative of serious part failures - have the transmission tested and inspected by a professional.
Reinstall the magnet, clean the gasket mounting surface on the pan, then reinstall the pan on the transmission. The pan gasket can be cleaned and reused so long as it has not cracks or signs of deterioration.
Torque the 20 pan bolts to 11 ft-lbs. Discard the used filter; it should be treated as an oil filter and appropriately recycled. The magnet is encased in a plastic housing, so do not use harsh solvents to clean it i. The nipple on the base inserts into the filter element top and bottom of the filter element are identical and then the assembly installs into the housing with the spring seating into the indentation on the bottom of the housing.
If possible, you can remove much of the guesswork out of refilling the transmission by measuring the amount of fluid removed. Check transmission fluid level and add as necessary. Check for leaks around the transmission pan and external filter housing.

Any time the battery is disconnected for any reason, including dead battery, a new PCM has been installed, or the calibration has been reflashed, the adapts for the "Engagement Schedule" should be reset. This procedure will prevent the customer from returning with firm or harsh shift or engagement complaints. Proceed as follows: Note: All of the following engagements must be performed, in order for engagement pressures to correctly adapt with the new calibration.
Perform 5 engagements from Park to Reverse. Each engagement should be five seconds apart. Perform 5 engagements from Drive to Reverse. Perform 5 engagements from Reverse to Drive. Perform 5 engagements from Neutral to Drive. Then drive the vehicle in steady mid throttle range, up shift then slow down to stop and redo times.
Cause: No signs of actually overheating or cold : Likely Failed transmission fluid sensor and or internal harness. Unplug the transmission vehicle harness connector and turn the key on with the engine off.
If 5 volts is not seen, then the wire is damaged or the PCM may be defective. If approximately 5 volts is seen then verify the external sensor ground circuit as follows. Leave the positive meter lead at terminal 18 where approximately 5 volts was previously seen.
Remove the negative meter lead from the known good ground and place the negative meter lead to terminal 22 in the vehicle harness connector. The meter reading should indicate the same 5 volts as when the negative meter lead was connected to ground. If approximately 5 volts is not seen at this time then the external ground circuit is at fault. This should be done on nay overhaul repair etc to prevent this from happening again. One cause can be a worn pressure regulator valve and or sticking valve that allows a slam into gear or low pressure and then a slam causing a neutral drop condition that can break the drum.
Always check pressure regulator valve, and bore for wear or sticking. Do Not use any other kind of transmission fluids in this transmission as damage will result.
With trucks built before there's an updated manual valve to fix a problem with a clunk or thump when coming out of reverse to park position. Youll have to remove the solenoid control body and then replace the manual valve. You may need to replace the body gasketa s well when removing the solenoid body.
Theres been allot of venting complaints with this transmission and the cause if its not overfull or overheating can be the pump halves are warping and have cross leaks. One fix is to replace with new pump or you can have machinist machine the halves flat.
5R110W TorqShift Transmission Service
Or try hand lapping the halves with stone. This can occur with no trouble codes setting, Intermittently you may have no reverse or a delay etc. You will notice the new switches have a different spring design to correct rattling which can cause the wear.
The Mass air flow sensor can cause soft, slipping and or harsh shifting problems in ford trucks and you may not have any transmission codes. This can be caused by dirty sensor from dirty air cleaners or over oiled aftermarket air filters, failing sensors. If transmission is soft, has drawn out shifts and slipping shifts you can disconnect MAF and drive truck.
This can be caused by a bad ground from battery to engine block.
Ground cable must go to engine block only, do not ground to transmission bell housing or any other area. The adaptive strategy does not create a shift schedule unique to individual drivers. Rather, through a continuous process, the system measures the time it takes a particular shift to occur from the time the PCM commands the shift to the time the shift is completecompares this value to the programmed ideal time, and makes pressure adjustments accordingly.
Matching the actual real-world shift time to the ideal shift time through optimization of engagement pressures is the primary objective of the adaptive strategy. To create a comprehensive engagement schedule, the transmission must be operated in a variety of load and speed combinations. As such, the shift schedule will need to be regenerated anytime a vehicle loses power i.
It is not uncommon for the transmission to exhibit crude behavior and rough or harsh engagements for a period of time after losing the stored shift schedule information. The PCM will automatically re-learn and adjust the shift schedule as necessary through normal driving. However, the process may be expedited through manual relearn procedures.
While selected, the transmission will provide an alternative shift schedule that prevents shift hunting while towing, engages torque converter lockup at lower engine speeds which allows for engine braking and speed control on long descentsand will command downshifts on descents to maintain a safe vehicle speed.
The procedures are as follows:. Repeat the process at medium throttle input, and finally at wide open throttle if permitted, always obey local traffic laws.
Following these procedures will potentially reduce the relearn time of the adaptive strategy system. Problems with the 5RW can be vaguely separated into two categories. Engine problems may be misappropriately diagnosed as a transmission issue and therefore should be repaired before attempting to troubleshoot a transmission. The transmission will trigger diagnostic trouble codes DTCbut most code readers do not have the capability to retrieve codes set by the 5RW TorqShift transmission. As such, do not assume that your code reader has the functionality to retrieve such codes unless specifically noted by the product manufacturer.
AutoEnginuity software will retrieve such advanced codes and is widely popular amongst home mechanics. The 5RW is unique in that it lacks a typical valve body - instead, the 5RW contains a "solenoid body", which contains a series of 7 electronic shift solenoids. In lieu of a hydraulically controlled shift system, the PCM commands shifts and controls line pressure by means of these shift solenoids.
A problem that is not mechanical i. Both electrical and mechanical problems are generally detected and a fault code is set. When a transmission code is thrown, the check engine light will not illuminate in the dash. If the light begins flashing, a transmission fault has been detected and can be retrieved with a proper diagnostic tool.
Shift solenoids can be checked by draining the transmission fluid and removing the transmission oil pan. To test a solenoid, remove the solenoid's electrical connector and test the resistance in Ohms across the two pins.
Solenoids can be mechanical stuck i. Not all the solenoids are identical and therefore not interchangeable - some solenoids are directly proportional normally closedmeaning pressure is increased by increasing the amperage applied to the solenoid.Root note 9
Other solenoids are indirectly proportional normally openmeaning that pressure is reduced by increasing the amperage supplied to the solenoid. Additionally, there are three different mounting tab configurations on the body of the solenoid that make it impossible to interchange solenoid part numbers between unlike solenoids. The transmission line pressure can be tested in all ranges by first attaching a compatible test gauge to the transmission pressure port.
The pressure test port is located on the driver side of the transmission - reference the figure below.Ampeg ba 112 replacement speaker
Once the plug has been removed and a transmission pressure gauge has been installed, record pressure and compare to the factory spec:.The IAB has 45 affiliate associations around the world.
